LK Advani admitted to Apollo hospital in Delhi

Lal Krishna Advani, 96, veteran BJP leader and Bharat Ratna awardee, has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi. Hospital officials confirmed his condition is stable, and he is under observation for routine medical care.

Mr. Advani was brought to the hospital two days ago and is receiving treatment from Dr. Vinit Suri, a senior neurology consultant. This marks his fourth hospitalisation since July due to recurring age-related health issues.

Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, Mr. Advani joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1942. Following the Partition in 1947, his family migrated to India. He later became a founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980 after previously being associated with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, established in 1951.

Mr. Advani played a significant role in shaping the BJP, serving as its national president multiple times and spearheading the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s, which bolstered the party’s prominence. He is recognized for his efforts in expanding the BJP from its earlier marginal presence in Indian politics.

He held key roles in the government, including Information and Broadcasting Minister during the Janata Party government in 1977, Home Minister from 1998 to 2004, and Deputy Prime Minister under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government from 1999 to 2004.

On March 30, 2024, Mr. Advani was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, by President Droupadi Murmu. His political career spanning decades has established him as one of India’s most influential leaders.
